Summary Having electronic monitoring is a good thing, if used appropriately. It is for the community and employee's safety that there is some sort of surveillance out to prevent crime and look out for the public's safety. I believe the laws that state that sex offenders are to be monitored constantly should have been enforced long ago. They need to be monitored so that they do not abuse anyone else, if they're not in jail, so that the community can be protected further. They only danger to electronic monitoring, is that it is easily abused and issues such as invasion of privacy come into it. Some customer calls and their duration are monitored, and some trucking companies have installed tracking devices in every truck. This can be both, a disadvantage and an advantage. The advantage would be if the truck driver got lost, help would come their way. The disadvantage would be that there is no trust between the employer and employee. With electronic monitoring, there is always a positive and a negative, whatever the situation. Video surveillance can prevent theft, crime, keep our community safe and to protect business interests. However, the elaborate constant electronic monitoring and tracking devices that the government has at the Christmas Island Detention Centre and forced refugees to wear should not be allowed. The detained refugees are not criminals and not giving them privacy is crossing the line between using electronic monitoring appropriately and abusing it.
